Mid-1970s French Space Age Chromed Metal and Lacquered Wood Floor Lamp – 63”

This chromed metal and lacquered wood 1970s French Floor Lamp, attributed to Pierre Folie and produced by Jalest for Jacques Charpentier, manifests an organic and dynamic composition. Rising from a geometric black lacquered plinth, multiple flexible chromed metal stems extend upwards, ramifying into a vital form. Each stem terminates in an orientable spherical diffuser, also rendered in chromed metal, embodying the sculptural and futurist aesthetics characteristic of the Space Age movement prevalent in European design of the period.
The construction articulates a precise rhythm of reflective surfaces and adjustable volumes. The flexible stems, housing internal wiring, allow for directed illumination, while the spherical diffusers offer a focused light output. Visible minor pitting is present on the exterior chromed surfaces, indicative of material interaction over time. The interior surfaces of the diffusers exhibit localized oxidation marks. A minor fracture is observed on the lacquered plinth, consistent with its structural history. The underside of the plinth bears the “Jalest” inscription, identifying the French fabrication workshop.
The object’s slender verticality and dynamic radial spread assert a pronounced sculptural volume within a given space. The interplay of highly reflective chromed elements against the matte black lacquered base allows for a continuous interaction with ambient light and surrounding textures. Its form is effectively articulated against raw concrete, honed stone, or minimalist plaster surfaces, creating focal points of directed illumination or ambient reflectivity through the adjustability of its individual light sources.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
